There are many ways for an axle shaft assembly to get damaged where it would need to be replaced. Most commonly, axle shaft assemblies fail when the joint boot tears allowing for the lubricating grease to escape and for contaminants such as water and dirt to get in. If you need to replace an entire axle, look no further. This is the same axle that BMW used to build your car with. It has been professionally rebuilt by BMW with genuine replacement parts. CV Axle Assembly

The CV (Constant Velocity) axle assembly is responsible for transferring torque and rotational power from the transmission to the wheels while allowing for suspension movement and steering articulation. The CV axle consists of a shaft with joints at both ends: a CV joint that connects the axle to the transmission and another CV joint that connects the axle to the wheel hub. This design allows the axle to handle changes in angle and length as the vehicle moves, especially when turning or going over bumps.

CV Axle Assembly Failure Symptoms
  • Clicking or Popping Noises: One of the most common signs of a failing CV axle is a clicking or popping noise when turning the vehicle. This noise typically occurs when the CV joint is damaged or worn out, especially during sharp turns.
  • Vibration While Driving: A failing CV axle can cause noticeable vibrations while driving, especially at higher speeds. This vibration may indicate that the axle is bent, or damaged, or that the CV joints are worn out.
  • Grease Leaks: If the CV axle boot tears or cracks, grease can leak out. You may notice grease on the inside of the wheel or around the CV joint. This can lead to increased wear on the joint due to a lack of lubrication.

its longer and causes problems
the one I got installed, didnt get it from FCP euro ..but same brand caused the car to drive with vibration, clunking sound mechanic checked again and another mechanic they found out its too long and on bumps and turns it is too close to the shaft and makes that sound

The only CV Axle you should buy for your BMW
I purchased some other (cheaper) axles prior to this one to install on my E53 4.8is, but they resulted in some drivetrain vibration while accelerating. About a month after the install, a boot came loose and ejected the grease all over the wheel well and engine bay that was absolutely pristine from all the previous work I had done. I broke down and spent the money on this GKN replacement and no issues. No vibration, and much higher quality boots and clamps.

install
Install went fairly smoothly. The only pain point was the hub end. The shaft would go into the hub with splines engaged but wouldn't go all the the last 3/4 inch without using a hammer drill to tap on the curved ledge of the CV joint so I could thread the nut. I had wire brushed and lubed the splines plenty. I took it apart and retried several times but it was always a little too snug. Got it in eventually and all is golden now.

I chose to simply replace the entire Axle Shaft instead of rebuilding, regreasing and rebooting my existing shafts and I really am glad that I did. This new shaft popped right into place, made the repair very quick and almost painless.
