Brand new OEM axle shaft assembly from GKN Loebro

Your vehicle's CV axle is a crucial component of its drivetrain/axle that transfers power from the transmission to the wheels. Over thousands of miles, various road and weather conditions, axle boots can tear or simply stretch and wear. If a tear occurs in a boot, the grease will leak out allowing contaminants to get into the joint. If caught soon enough, you can reboot the axle and preserve it. However, if a torn boot is ignored, an axle replacement will eventually be needed. This is usually indicated by drivetrain vibrations under acceleration and clicking coming from the CV joints.

CV Axle Assembly

The CV (Constant Velocity) axle assembly is responsible for transferring torque and rotational power from the transmission to the wheels while allowing for suspension movement and steering articulation. The CV axle consists of a shaft with joints at both ends: a CV joint that connects the axle to the transmission and another CV joint that connects the axle to the wheel hub. This design allows the axle to handle changes in angle and length as the vehicle moves, especially when turning or going over bumps.

CV Axle Assembly Failure Symptoms
  • Clicking or Popping Noises: One of the most common signs of a failing CV axle is a clicking or popping noise when turning the vehicle. This noise typically occurs when the CV joint is damaged or worn out, especially during sharp turns.
  • Vibration While Driving: A failing CV axle can cause noticeable vibrations while driving, especially at higher speeds. This vibration may indicate that the axle is bent, or damaged, or that the CV joints are worn out.
  • Grease Leaks: If the CV axle boot tears or cracks, grease can leak out. You may notice grease on the inside of the wheel or around the CV joint. This can lead to increased wear on the joint due to a lack of lubrication.

No issues 6 months later - working well
Providing feedback after having the part installed for ~1.5 years and driving roughly 5k miles. No issues with this CV axle. Vehicle is a 2001 BMW X5 3.0 with the 5-speed manual.

Expected more for OEM
Pretty disappointed that the outer boot has already failed on this. For a new, not remanufactured part, this should have lasted more than 4 years. Not sure that I'll swap the whole thing out again for just the outer boot. Likely to go with a boot from the dealership and see what kind of mileage I get from that. I'll be watching the other side as both were replaced, although at different dates.

inferior quality product - BMW CAR CLUB MEMBER -- 40+ years
the boots are ridiculously inferior -- had to replace my axles in < 16 mos -- due to extended travel in sub-zero temps -- the boots disintegrated - and doubling the labor costs because of inferior products is not my idea of fun

The only replacement CV axle you should buy for your BMW
I purchased some other (cheaper) axles prior to this one to install on my E53 4.8is, but they resulted in some drivetrain vibration while accelerating. About a month after the install, a boot came loose and ejected the grease all over the wheel well and engine bay that was absolutely pristine from all the previous work I had done. I broke down and spent the money on this GKN replacement and no issues. No vibration, and much higher quality boots and clamps.

BMW Axle Assembly - GKN 31607565313
I chose to simply replace the entire Axle Shaft instead of rebuilding, regreasing and rebooting my existing shafts and I really am glad that I did. This new shaft popped right into place, made the repair very quick and almost painless.
