If your BMW's transmission is feeling a little clunky or is hesitating to downshift or up shift it may be time for a transmission service. We know what you're thinking, my BMW has a "lifetime" fill. Well, we'll put it simply: there is no such thing.

Any type of fluid will break down over time as it goes through heating and cooling cylces. One of the most expensive components on your BMW outside of your engine is the transmission and we absolutely believe that this is an item that should be serviced regularly for the best performance and service life.

BMW even changed their tune on this matter and now say that automatic transmissions should have an extended service (100,000 miles+). Here at FCP we believe that if you really want your BMW to operate flawlessly it is best to do a transmission drain and fill every 30,000 miles or two years.

This kit is designed to do a basic drain and fill service. This method is less intrusive than a "transmission flush" which requires a machine and proper equipment. It is not uncommon for flush machines to damage transmissions when not operated correctly and we especially do not recommend a "flush" type service on a transmission that has 100,000+ miles on it. A drain and fill is a lot like changing engine oil and is a pretty straight forward task.

You will notice right away that your transmission shifts faster and operates smoother. You can take it a step further by doing multiple drain and fills over the course of 10,000 miles to ensure all old fluid is removed from the system.

Transmission Service Kit

The transmission oil filter prevents harmful particulate matter from entering the transmission valve body and damaging valve body bores, solenoids, and other fluid passages. Foreign particles in valve body bores, solenoids, or passages will cause shifting issues. Some of these issues include delayed shifts, harsh shifts, or no gear engagement in extreme cases. Clogged filters can reduce fluid volume and flow in the transmission causing starvation of the transmission pump. This can be identified by an RPM-dependent whine from the transmission bell housing area. The transmission oil filter should be changed during any fluid service, and it is critical to replace the filter if major transmission components are replaced such as the torque converter, transmission pump, or transmission valve body.

Great kit, but the pan bolts didn't work for me.
This kit made changing the auto trans fluid and filter in our e53 X5 a lot easier. It was great to pump in a high quality lubricant (with a fresh filter) at nearly 100k mi. The only drawback was the included bolts didn't seem to fit. The old bolts threaded all the way in by hand-- the new bolts got very tight after initially threading. This usually means the fastener is too big or the thread pitch is wrong. I didn't feel comfortable risking stripping the holes, so I had to re-use the old hardware. Not a big deal. FYI: You will need a transfer pump or similar tool to install the fluid and (at least on this model) there is a warm-up procedure which ensures the transmission fluid is at the correct level. This can be found in DIYs online.

Service that tranny don't ignore it!
This service kit is great. Except that the transmission pan seal perhaps leaves a bit to be desired. For next service cycle I will use the BMW original part that feels a bit more sturdy than the rubber one included in this bundle. The filter is good and the new screws for the pan are great. Made the whole task very easy to perform, car shifts great great an is in great shape to keep rolling for many more miles to come with the new transmission fluid. I also recommend replacement of the transmission shifter seal if yours is leaking. The FCP kit for that task is available on the site and their is plenty of DIY tutorials on the web to assist you with the transmission fluid exchange.
