Product Information

For A5S390R (5L40-E) transmissions, comes with filter, gasket, and oil pan bolts

When performing a drain and fill on your X5's automatic transmission it is important to replace the transmission filter which is responsible for catching wear material and other debris.

Transmission Filter Kit

The transmission oil filter prevents harmful particulate matter from entering the transmission valve body and damaging valve body bores, solenoids, and other fluid passages. Foreign particles in valve body bores, solenoids, or passages will cause shifting issues. Some of these issues include delayed shifts, harsh shifts, or no gear engagement in extreme cases. Clogged filters can reduce fluid volume and flow in the transmission causing starvation of the transmission pump. This can be identified by an RPM-dependent whine from the transmission bell housing area. The transmission oil filter should be changed during any fluid service, and it is critical to replace the filter if major transmission components are replaced such as the torque converter, transmission pump, or transmission valve body.

Transmission Filter Kit Failure Symptoms
  • Whining noise from the transmission pump
  • Driveability and shift quality issues including harsh shifts, delayed shifts, or no gear engagement

Question Posted by a customer
On most, if not all the BMW forums recommend using ONLY a Filtran filter when doing a transmission fluid flush for my ZF 5HP24 automatic transmission that is located on my 2001 BMW 740i (E38). However, I do not see the Filtran brand 5HP24 transmission filter being sold on your website? Can you give me some direction on locating a Filtran automatic transmission filter for a 5HP24?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Slightly confused by the nature of your question. This specific product you're asking the question on is for a GM transmission, commonly known as the 5L40E (internally designated by BMW as the A5S360R/390R), and does not fit a 2001 740i. GM does not use Filtrain filters. Filtran also does not supply filters directly. For the ZF 5HP24 (BMW A5S440Z) we offer two options, Genuine BMW and ZF (both filters manufactured by Filtran for ZF which in turn supplies to BMW), p/n 24341422673 is the filter for that transmission/application.
