BMW's B48 engine has shown itself to be robust and reliable across numerous platforms. However, nothing is perfect. One engineering decision BMW made was constructing the oil filter housing from a plastic composite. One thing that seems to be a common theme when plastic composites are used is they tend to fail in the long run. Over time, the oil filter housing on the B48 engine has shown itself to be a major weak point. There are a few common failure modes:
- Broken housing due to overtightening of oil filter cap
- Leaking from perimeters of the oil filter housing
- Coolant and oil mixing due to cross-contamination from the degradation of the oil filter housing
The first-generation B48 engine specifically has had a major issue with coolant and engine oil mixing due to material degradation. This problem if not caught in time will cause engine failure. This Rein oil filter housing made from aluminum will not suffer from the same failure that the OE plastic oil filter housing and will be a lifelong component for your B48-powered BMW.
Your vehicles of filter cap protects the oil filter cartridge. It is not uncommon for the cap to become damaged from improper tool usage, heat or age. At the first signs of damage replace your oil filter cap to prevent more serious damage to your engine.

Bought this to replace the plastic original unit which failed suddenly on my youngest daughter's 2019 X3 stranding her. The original unit lasted exactly 70,174 miles, then catastrophically failed bleeding coolant fast and stranding her, luckily not too far from home. I had to get the car towed home. After removing the original plastic unit it seems the center channel fell apart causing rapid coolant loss. I believe this is a fairly common failure point on these engines. Hopefully this unit will hold up better. I purchased this Rein unit because FCP sells it. In addition I also bought and installed OEM BMW oil filter housing gaskets, because I've heard a few people complain about the Rein gaskets. It seems like a sold unit, this until will not breakdown like the plastic unit, the failure point will be the gaskets. Hopefully they last longer than 70,174 miles. On the original one I took off the car the gaskets were still doing their job, the failure was the center channel broke apart. I guess we'll see. Installation was straightforward.
Very frustrating to have to go back and tear into my engine to swap out the faulty gaskets. DO NOT use gaskets that came with unit, you will regret it.
The (QTY 4) e-torx bolts do not stay in place captive like they do on the OEM housing. I tipped the housing over my engine bay and lost 3/4 bolts, so I reused the original bolts which also didn't stay captive in the holes. Also for manual cars the plastic cap on the outboard side of the engine needs to be replaced with the cap from the original housing. This made me lose an hour or two on diagnosis and then installing said cap. On an auto you won't have this issue because the cap needs to be removed to hook up your transmission cooler anyways.
As the subject says... it's slowly leaking after less than a year.
The gasket failed after 176 days. I do not recommend using the gasket provided. Get the BMW OEM.

High quality part. After 3k miles no complaints and no longer worrying about loosing all my coolant like I was with the plastic OEM part.
I haven't installed this at the time of the review, but one thing to note, the picture on the FCP Euro doesn't show that the oil cooler is included with the housing. For the B46 engine, you won't need the oil cooler gaskets, I believe.
My plastic oil filter housing had a major crack and only leaked coolant and replaced it with this metal one and have had no major issues or leaks since and it works beautifully.

Yes, based on the provided VIN, this will fit. You can get this as an aluminum upgrade to the original housing, or stick with the original plastic housing by getting the Genuine BMW version.

I've received competing information regarding the torque values for the OFH to the block. Lots of literature claims 22nm(16 ft-lb), However your recommendation is 8nm, can you clarify this? Thank you.
