120 amp, remanufactured compact alternator

If your BMW is running out of power (literally) it's likely due to a worn or damaged alternator. The battery on board the car stores enough power to start the car while the alternator is responsible for powering the car while its running as well as maintaining the batter charge. If the alternator is not charging the battery you will run out of power since the battery alone can't support all of your BMW's functions.

A rebuilt/remanufactured unit from Bosch is basically a brand new alternator. The only part used from the original unit in normally the metal cage. All internals and electrical parts are replaced with new factory parts. It will perform the same as the original equipment part did. We often find that OEM remanufactured parts last longer as upgraded/newly designed components are used in place of original parts.

Valeo is the original equipment supplier of this alternator to BMW. This is a Valeo alternator that has been rebuilt by Bosch.

Alternator

If your car is running out of power (literally) it's likely due to a worn or failing alternator. Your vehicles car battery is responsible for storing enough energy to start the car while the alternator powers all the vehicles systems with the engine running while maintaining a battery charge. If your car dies while driving and the battery has little to no charge it's most likely due to a failed or failing alternator. Before condemning an alternator you can perform a simple test with a DVOM (digital volt meter). Also make sure the belt which drives the alternator is properly tensioned as well.

  • Low voltage generated while car is running
  • Dim or flickering headlights
  • Dim or flickering interior lights
  • Electrical systems such as the radio, power windows, sunroof do not function

Original Alternator jammed and bought this as a replacement, purchased last year, have not even driven 100 miles and the battery light is on. I am in another country so now I will have to pay for shipping and local duty charges all over again to replace this defective item.

Bosch Remanufactured Alternator
I bought this reman unit in Feb of 2024. It failed in Sep of 2025. The original BMW unit lasted nearly 200k miles and 24 years. I didn't even get two years out of the reman unit on an M3 with a stock electrical draw. I can get it replaced via FCPs wonderful warranty, but I have no desire to be changing these out on a bi-annual basis. Just pay the extra and get the OE Valeo unit unless you'd rather consider the alternator a bi-annual wear item.

You get what you pay for! Not bad.
Did the job admirably for 2.5 years/27k miles. Seems to be par for the course, so just have that expectation. You save a ton of money with the remanufactured unit, and FCP's guarantee makes it worth doing the job more often than with a brand new unit. IMO a decent trade-off, but I do wish I had known when I bought it initially. Stinks to have to suddenly do this job in the middle of winter!

Got 2.5 years out of mine
I purchased this in May 2021. It failed September 2023. The dashboard battery light came on and the voltage reading on my head unit screen showed 11.x volts. I had about a 10 mile drive home and during that time I watched the voltage reading fluctuate from 11.x volts up to 13.5 or so, back and forth. As another reviewer noted, I'm shocked that an alternator would fail after such a short period of time. Once I got home, I charged the battery and tested voltage with a multimeter. 12.5 volts with the car shut off. 12.5 volts (or less) with the car running. Both measured at the battery. So, the alternator is clearly not producing anything. I'm thankful for the FCP lifetime guarantee though given how monstrous a pain it is to get the alternator out of a supercharged M3, I find myself wondering if I should bite the bullet and buy a new one this time around. Decisions, decisions.

Was great. Lasted 3 years then fried !
So, this was a great part. But it just fried on me. 9/17/2020. I don't have aftermarket stereo items. Purchased & installed in 2017. Fried on me last week. Smelled like burnt electrical motor and then the Red battery light was intermittently flickering after the smell. On a car that was driven maybe half the duration of those 3 years. Thank goodness for the ability to pull up the Voltage output on the dash (showed 11.4 while running) & thank goodness for lifetime warranty by FCP. But very weird. Never had an alternator last so short.
