A/C Receiver Drier

The A/C receiver drier is essentially a filter for your vehicle's air conditioning, specifically in systems that use a thermal expansion valve. Its primary function is to remove moisture and filter debris from the refrigerant, ensuring the system operates efficiently and without damage. The receiver drier is located on the high-pressure side of the A/C system, between the condenser and the expansion valve. Usually, it is mounted onto the condenser itself. Inside the drier, there’s a filter and desiccant material that absorbs moisture from the refrigerant. Moisture in the A/C system can cause significant issues, such as corrosion, ice formation, or damage to components like the compressor, as it can mix with the refrigerant to form acids.

The receiver drier must be replaced whenever the A/C system is opened, such as during repairs or when components like the compressor or condenser are replaced. This is because the desiccant inside the drier has a limited capacity to absorb moisture, and once the system is exposed to the atmosphere, it can quickly become saturated. A saturated drier cannot effectively remove moisture, leading to potential damage and decreased system efficiency. Additionally, debris that has been filtered out of the refrigerant can accumulate over time, reducing the system's performance.

Regular replacement of the receiver drier during major A/C repairs or maintenance ensures the system remains clean, dry, and functioning optimally.

A/C Receiver Drier Failure Symptoms
  • Saturation: When the desiccant inside the receiver drier reaches saturation, it allows water to circulate in the refrigerant. Water in the cooling system can cause ice clogs, and even form a type of corrosive acid which eats away the various other components of the AC system
  • Debris clogging: If for whatever reason debris such as flecks of coating, dust, or shop grit gets into the AC system the A/C receiver drier should filter it out. If there is a lot of it, it could cause a clog which effectively shuts down the air conditioning.
  • Leaks: The receiver drier does contain a pressurized liquid refrigerant which must be sealed when installed. New seals should always be included with the A/C receiver drier, never install one without fresh seals or you may encounter leaks that will result in A/C failure.

About Mahle Behr

Mahle Behr GmbH & Co. KG is a German corporation active in the automobile industry, headquartered in Stuttgart-Feuerbach. It is a specialist for automotive air conditioning and engine cooling systems. Mahle began in 1920 when pistons made of heavy gray cast iron were being used in internal combustion engines for automobiles and there was a need for a new design. The Mahle brothers countered this trend by producing light-alloy pistons at their small, newly established company however the technology was still finicky and problems come up frequently. They soon determined that they needed to come up with a solution to keep dirt and dust out of the engine so they eventually developed air and oil filters as well. Their perseverance paid off and the light-alloy pistons began to take over the market. Today, half of all automobiles produced worldwide contain MAHLE components. MAHLE offers an extensive range of parts for everyone including pistons, cylinder liners, piston ring sets, bearings, assemblies, valves, valve train components, and air, oil, fuel, and cabin air filters. Their catalog and online database of aftermarket engine components is an indispensable reference. In early 2016, Stuttgart-based MAHLE GmbH increased its holding in the Behr Group from 36.85 percent to approximately 51 percent with the acquisition of all shares in the BWK GmbH holding company. The company now goes by Mahle-Behr.

Perfect fit!!
Be sure and check your car before you order your parts!! I made the mistake of ordering the original receiver/dryer part number... I didn't know that my car had already received the updated conversion. Around 1990, all systems (R12 and R134a) were converted to THIS dryer which uses a single switch for both high pressure and low pressure. Once I received this part... installation was a breeze. Genuine factory fit and function.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Anant
Hi i bought this item, but my car still has both the high (black) and low (green) pressure switch on the current unit installed in my car. Can I use this item as correct replacement for my setup
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
You should have to transfer the switches over from the old unit. If you need assistance with service information you are welcome to email us at service@fcpeuro.com for more assistance.
Question Posted by a customer
Does this include the necessary o-rings? If not, which ones are needed for the lines and pressure switch?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The pressure switch would be part number 64538390971, listed below. No O-ring though, the lines to and from are threaded to the male ends of the drier which do not use O rings. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-safety-pressure-switch-r12-r134a-64538390971
Question Posted by a customer
