Product Information

A common replacement during A/C system repairs, considered a disposable item

The receiver-drier must be changed each time a system is empty regardless of the reason for loss of refrigerant. It should also be changed every three years, because the desiccant pellets will break down and clog the expansion valve. This will in turn cause the system to become inoperable and May damage the compressor.

The receiver-drier is strictly a disposable item and is thought of in the same terms as a fuel, oil, or air filter. In fact, if any component fails or is replaced for any reason, the receiver-drier must also be replaced to prevent corrosion and moisture in the system.

The receiver-drier performs three functions:

  • It filters the system of non-condensables.
  • It receives the liquid refrigerant and maintains a certain level of liquid at the bottom at all times in a properly charged system.
  • It contains a stack of pellets called desiccant (drying agent) to trap and absorb moisture. NOTE that moisture is the most harmful enemy of the air conditioning system. If any moisture is in the system, it will combine with the refrigerant to form hydrochloric acid which is extremely corrosive to metal components.

Replacing the receiver-drier is essential when servicing the A/C system. Whenever you replace a component of the A/C system you must also replace the receiver-drier. If you do not change the receiver-drier there could be serious damage to the other parts of the system, which could be very costly.

A/C Receiver Drier

The A/C receiver drier is essentially a filter for your vehicle's air conditioning, specifically in systems that use a thermal expansion valve. Its primary function is to remove moisture and filter debris from the refrigerant, ensuring the system operates efficiently and without damage. The receiver drier is located on the high-pressure side of the A/C system, between the condenser and the expansion valve. Usually, it is mounted onto the condenser itself. Inside the drier, there’s a filter and desiccant material that absorbs moisture from the refrigerant. Moisture in the A/C system can cause significant issues, such as corrosion, ice formation, or damage to components like the compressor, as it can mix with the refrigerant to form acids.

The receiver drier must be replaced whenever the A/C system is opened, such as during repairs or when components like the compressor or condenser are replaced. This is because the desiccant inside the drier has a limited capacity to absorb moisture, and once the system is exposed to the atmosphere, it can quickly become saturated. A saturated drier cannot effectively remove moisture, leading to potential damage and decreased system efficiency. Additionally, debris that has been filtered out of the refrigerant can accumulate over time, reducing the system's performance.

Regular replacement of the receiver drier during major A/C repairs or maintenance ensures the system remains clean, dry, and functioning optimally.

A/C Receiver Drier Failure Symptoms
  • Saturation: When the desiccant inside the receiver drier reaches saturation, it allows water to circulate in the refrigerant. Water in the cooling system can cause ice clogs, and even form a type of corrosive acid which eats away the various other components of the AC system
  • Debris clogging: If for whatever reason debris such as flecks of coating, dust, or shop grit gets into the AC system the A/C receiver drier should filter it out. If there is a lot of it, it could cause a clog which effectively shuts down the air conditioning.
  • Leaks: The receiver drier does contain a pressurized liquid refrigerant which must be sealed when installed. New seals should always be included with the A/C receiver drier, never install one without fresh seals or you may encounter leaks that will result in A/C failure.

About Rein

Founded in 2007, CRP Automotive introduced the Rein Automotive line of OE-quality replacement parts to the aftermarket. And in just two short years, Rein Automotive has become very popular among both warehouse distributors and professional repair technicians. Rein is the German word for “pure”, and has come to be synonymous with quality in the automotive aftermarket. A true dealer alternative.

The Rein brand includes a growing number of “better than OE” parts for selected applications. These parts address known weaknesses and premature failures of factory parts. Many of these replacement and service solutions have been developed with the help of our Innovation Council, a hand-picked group of experienced professional repair technicians and shop owners throughout North America.

All Rein Automotive OE-quality parts are backed by the CRP Automotive standard, and are backed with a ISO 9001:2015 quality management system certification. Each year, CRP Automotive ships thousands of Rein Automotive brand products. And with widespread NAFTA market distribution through strategically placed warehouses in Cranbury, New Jersey and Puebla, Mexico - OE-quality products like Rein Automotive are delivered to customers both faster and more cost-effectively than ever before.

In 2017 Rein partnered with FCP Euro in competing a W204 C300 AER car for the 2017 season. The partnership focused FCP Euro to dive deep into the Rein catalog offering, and hundreds of new products were added and integrated into our catalog. Hundreds of new packages were created not only using the full part pine up of Rein products, but also the entire family of CRP products like Pentosin.

Rein is also an innovative brand, winning numerous trade awards — including multiple new product innovation awards at the annual AAPEX trade show.
