Product Information

A critical part of your BMW's A/C system, a potential cause of A/C system performance issues

If your BMW's air conditioning system is not working properly or is not cooling well it could be due to a couple of problem areas. The A/C condensor is located at the front of your BMW in front of the radiator and can get pelted by road debris. If the fins are worn our, bent, or missing it could easily cause the condensor to fail. Cracks or visible severe damage will necessitate immediate replacement of the A/C condensor.

A/C Condenser

The A/C condenser is effectively a radiator for your vehicle's A/C system, designed to vent heat from the air conditioner's refrigerant. The A/C condenser is usually mounted to or near the main radiator in the front of the vehicle. Its function is to cool the high-pressure hot gas refrigerant coming from the compressor, condensing it back into a liquid. The cooled liquid leaves the condenser and flows through the A/C receiver drier on its way to the evaporator, where the evaporation process provides cool air to the cabin. A/C condensers are typically made completely out of aluminum and are fairly lightweight and delicate. Both sides of the A/C condenser are connected to the high and low-pressure pipes using bolted fittings and O-rings. Due to the high-pressure nature of the A/C system, even the most minor leak can cause complete A/C failure.

The most common reason for failure in A/C Condensers is from road debris, such as rocks or dirt, which causes punctures or bent fins. A punctured condenser will vent the refrigerant in the system, usually 134a, fairly quickly leading to immediate failure. Bent fins will not typically lead to condenser failure, but will reduce the effective cooling capacity due to reduced airflow.

Internal blockage is another common failure mode, mostly in older or higher-mileage vehicles that have not had regular A/C services. A blockage is usually caused by internal corrosion as a result of water accumulation in the system. The corrosion grows and clogs the narrow passages, leading to reduced efficiency and sometimes even cracks and leaks. Leaks can be hard to find, especially when the A/C condenser is peppered from thousands of miles of highway exposure. The best way to find a leak in your A/C system is to charge it with an oil containing reactive UV dye after a thorough engine bay cleaning, and running the air conditioning. If there is a leak, it will be easily viewed using a UV (black light) flashlight as a bright neon reflection.

A/C Condenser Failure Symptoms
  • Internal blockage: If the A/C system is rarely or never serviced, the A/C receiver drier will become saturated and allow water that has made it into the system to circulate along with the refrigerant. Water and R134a combine to create a corrosive acid, which causes corrosion buildup in the narrow passageways of the A/C condenser and evaporator, reducing efficiency and sometimes causing the A/C to stop working altogether.
  • External impact damage: The A/C Condenser is a lightweight aluminum assembly positioned right in the front of the car. It’s common to take a beating with prolonged high-speed miles, especially in the winter when the area uses rock salt on the roads. Even a pinhole leak is enough to eventually empty the A/C system, and leaks will not be readily identifiable without A/C dye.

Does not fit 1998 M3 Sedan
This has terrible figment and quality. It does not like up with the mounting holes on the support brackets or aux fan. Avoid, buy the own one.

Improper fitment
My experience follows the prior reviews. Once top screw mounts from engine bay area are “bolted” on, condenser will misalign with the bottom mounts for the aux fan. Was able to get 3/4 of the aux fan bolts in, and be somewhat secured. As with the bottom mounting tabs, I had to shift my aux fan slightly to the left to fit to my best achievement, which may give leverage for something to work with for now. Also, roll pins are not included, therefore goodluck with that as well. Bought a mixed pack at autozone in hopes that the heat expansion will give the roll pin area some supporting strength .

Will not fit the fan shroud for my 1998 328i
Like the other review, the screw mounts do not line up with the Original BMW condenser I was looking to replace. In addition, the lower mounting tabs (which are not present on the OE unit) prevent the condenser from fitting in the fan shroud. Very disappointed in this unit. I hope I can swap it for the OE unit quickly...

Does not fit on 95' M3 coupe
Needed a new one and after we had it installed with the front end off the car, the screw holes ended up not aligning with the aux fan. On top of that, the two bottom protruding notches make it impossible to mount the aux fan on. This has the exact same part number as the genuine part that actually fits, so do not be deceived. Make sure you remember exactly what your old condenser looks like before ordering.

Works fine, fits 318ti with small modification
The line connectors don't fit my 1998 318ti refrigerant lines out of the box. I used a rotary tool to grind down the edge to get my connectors to fit. I'm the second owner of my vehicle so it's *possible* that my lines are aftermarket but it's incredibly unlikely, the previous owner kept impeccable records and never mentioned any AC work. Other than that it's been fine -- it was easy to slide into place and bolted in with no issues.
