A hatch lift support, also called a liftgate strut or tailgate strut, is a pressurized gas cylinder used to assist in opening and holding a vehicle's hatch (or rear liftgate) in an open position; when it fails, you might notice the hatch struggling to open, not staying fully open, suddenly dropping, making unusual noises when opening/closing, or showing signs of fluid leakage around the strut's connection points.

• Hatch won't stay open: This is the most obvious sign, where the hatch slowly sags down after being opened
• Difficulty opening the hatch: You might need to use extra force to lift the hatch as the struts can't provide enough assistance
• Hatch suddenly drops: The hatch unexpectedly falls closed due to a complete loss of pressure in the strut
