A door sill plate (also called a scuff plate or door sill cover) is the trim piece located at the bottom threshold of a car’s door opening — the part you step over when entering or exiting the vehicle.

It can be made from plastic, aluminum, stainless steel, or illuminated materials and serves both a protective and decorative purpose.

Door Sill Plate Failure Symptoms
  • Scratches, Scuffs, or Dents: Common from repeated foot traffic, especially on metal or painted sills without strong protective coatings.
  • Cracks or Breakage (Plastic Sill Plates): Can occur from impact, heavy use, or aging materials becoming brittle.
