Product Information

At the first sign of cracking, it is imperative that you replace your coolant expansion tank, FCP recommends also replacing the expansion tank cap at the same time as the cap is not included with the new coolant tank.

Engine Coolant Reservoir

The engine coolant reservoir, also known as an ‘overflow bottle’ is a crucial component of modern vehicle cooling systems. Its job is to capture the increased volume of engine coolant that is created as the coolant is heated and expands. It needs someplace to go, so a coolant line that typically runs from the radiator outlet to the top of the engine coolant reservoir will feed the reservoir, while the reservoir feeds the engine as it needs more coolant to send through the engine and back through the radiator.

Engine coolant reservoirs are typically made of plastic and can be either clear or opaque. Some performance or aftermarket overflow bottles are made of aluminum or other more durable materials.

Engine Coolant Reservoir Failure Symptoms
  • Fogging: Over time, due to chemical exposure, age, and heat cycles, the clear plastic used in most engine coolant reservoirs can become foggy and opaque. This can make it difficult to read the coolant level accurately.
  • Leaks/ Cracking: The most common area for an engine coolant reservoir to leak is usually at a plastic seam or seal. As the bottle is run through thousands of heat cycles, from ambient temperatures below freezing to 200 degrees Fahrenheit plus, the weakest part of the reservoir, usually a seam or molded junction, can crack and fail.
  • Age: Over time, due to age and exposure, the plastic and materials will become brittle and prone to cracking and other age-related failures.
  • Coolant leaks: The most common failure of a bad engine coolant reservoir is a coolant leak. This can be slow or minimal, or it can be a total instant failure of the reservoir. If you notice a slow coolant leak and can diagnose it back to the overflow bottle, or coolant reservoir, it is recommended to replace it asap.
  • Overheating: A bad engine coolant reservoir can reduce engine cooling system pressure, reducing the effective boiling point of the engine coolant. Depending on temperatures and conditions, this can result in engine overheating.

About Mahle Behr

Mahle Behr GmbH & Co. KG is a German corporation active in the automobile industry, headquartered in Stuttgart-Feuerbach. It is a specialist for automotive air conditioning and engine cooling systems. Mahle began in 1920 when pistons made of heavy gray cast iron were being used in internal combustion engines for automobiles and there was a need for a new design. The Mahle brothers countered this trend by producing light-alloy pistons at their small, newly established company however the technology was still finicky and problems come up frequently. They soon determined that they needed to come up with a solution to keep dirt and dust out of the engine so they eventually developed air and oil filters as well. Their perseverance paid off and the light-alloy pistons began to take over the market. Today, half of all automobiles produced worldwide contain MAHLE components. MAHLE offers an extensive range of parts for everyone including pistons, cylinder liners, piston ring sets, bearings, assemblies, valves, valve train components, and air, oil, fuel, and cabin air filters. Their catalog and online database of aftermarket engine components is an indispensable reference. In early 2016, Stuttgart-based MAHLE GmbH increased its holding in the Behr Group from 36.85 percent to approximately 51 percent with the acquisition of all shares in the BWK GmbH holding company. The company now goes by Mahle-Behr.

Same Experience as others
I purchased this as the direct replacement for my TVR Cerbera 4.5. These were the original tanks used on those cars. This one by Behr never held since I bought it. Constantly dealt with leakage at what appeared to be the neck. Just ordered the Meyle - interested to see if that holds up.

Lasted 5 months
So the second one went in and it failed at the upper post where the overflow hose is attached. Quality is not consistent. The first I got had 6 yrs of life and this one lasted less than 6 months.

URS4 Coolant Tank
Purchased this item and was leaking from the centre post and the level sensor connection. FCP offered to replace the item and I covered the difference to purchase the slightly more expensive Vaico Coolant tank. Hoping this issue will not reoccur.

FOUR of these tanks have failed within a year
I just suffered the fourth and last failure of these Mahle coolant overflow tanks last week. I have switched to Meyle and had to contact FCP Euro last time to request my warranty replacement be Meyle instead of the Mahle brand tanks that have an insanely short life. The last one had the longest life so far, lasting from October 22, 2023 until May 7th, 2024. I had almost thought we had broken the Mahle curse but alas, it started leaking from the point where the upper and lower portions are joined via internal post... just like the last one. From here on out, it's going to be Meyle or any OTHER brand. Yes, these are very easy to replace on the C4 chassis cars but when you're doing it more often than oil changes it gets a bit frustrating. Lifetime warranty through FCP is nice but that gets expensive for me shipping failed tanks back almost every other month. Hey Mahle, if you're listening... this experience has taught me a valuable lesson about your once respectable brand and it's not good.

Nice tank that fits
Tank lasted me 6+ years and 52K on odo. Found out today it failed at the center attachment post. Can't complain at the price I paid. Originally bought two and the second is ready to go into replace the first one.

Another one bites the dust...
Just had ANOTHER one of these fail. I think my last review was about a month ago. Today I discovered that the new replacement bottle has once again failed near the center attachment post and started leaking coolant all over my driveway. That pretty much seals the deal for me. I've had at least three of these fail in just SIX months. Mahle, these tanks are nothing more than cheap Chinese trash... makes me think twice about buying anything else from your product line as well to be honest.

Absolute Pure Chinesium... avoid like the plague.
I bought these based on prior experience and the reputation of Hella Behr. Unfortunately, I've just had my 2nd tank failure in just six months. The first one failed at the sensor, the second one appears to have failed and the center post area. The second unit had been in the car for maybe a few months? Unfortunately I thought the first failure was just a fluke so I purchased several of them from FCP to have on the shelf as I have four C4 series cars in the family. From here on out though I'll take my chances with the Meyle units instead. These Mahle tanks have been far and away the worst I've ever encountered in nearly three decades.

Will buy again
Good quality, good price, these have a finite life and seem to last me about 5-6 years. The price is pretty good and I've considered buying a few extras for whenever they discontinue them. FYI my last two would develop a leak at the level sensor.

Bought this expansion tank some time ago and just now getting around to write my review. Perfect fit. No leaks. Plastic is well made and looks like it will last a decade or two like the original. Fast shipping and fair price.
