Coil Spring

A suspension coil spring is designed to support the weight of a vehicle and ensure that it rides and handles with an appropriate amount of ride height and weight transfer and control, and is an integral part of the overall suspension system, which typically includes shock absorbers/struts, and anti-roll bars. As part of a total system, the coil spring is designed to support and control the vehicle’s weight at each corner, while the damper (shock absorber or strut) controls the energy of that spring as the weight acts on it, compressing and releasing energy in the spring.

Suspension coil springs are usually made of high-grade unalloyed or steel alloys.

Coil Spring Failure Symptoms
  • Loss of rate - As the car is driven and the coil spring is cycled and compressed, the spring material will lose rate and tension, softening from its original specification
  • Breaking/cracking - Coil springs can fatigue to the point that they break or fail. This can happen at the front or rear, of any type of vehicle
  • Cracked or flaking paint coating - Most coil springs are painted or powder coated for durability and rust resistance. Over time this can begin to crack and flake, off, allowing the spring material to corrode
  • Sagging or uneven ride height - As a spring loses rate it can cause a loss of ride height, usually referred to as sagging springs. This can happen on any one corner but often seems to happen most often in the rear. A broken spring can also cause uneven ride height
  • Clunks, clanks, and other noises over bumps - A broken spring can cause various noises over different types of bumps and at different speeds. This could be from the spring itself, or other components making contact where they should not be
  • Rough ride, poor handling, lack of suspension support, or firmness - Once a coil spring loses enough spring rate, in addition to the above issues, you may notice a general lack of handling performance or the car may feel dull and not responsive. Additionally, you may notice a rougher-than-normal ride because the car will be ‘on the bump stops’ hitting potholes and large bumps.

About HR

In the late 1970’s Mr. Werner Heine (H) and Mr. Heinz Remmen (R) saw the need for an improved street suspension with a strong belief that vehicles could have more control and better handling. Today, every spring produced by H&R comes from the H&R ISO 9001 certified engineering and manufacturing facility in Germany. H&R Sport Springs offer the handling characteristics and aggressive appearance that you’ve been looking for, without the harsh ride characteristics of less-advanced spring systems. H&R Sport Springs feature more control and are engineered for the street, making them comfortable and fun to drive. Over the years, H&R has developed a diverse line of products and suspension applications including four different spring product lines, six different coil over product lines, two different Cup Kit product lines, a sway bar program, the largest wheel spacer and adapter program in the industry, camber adjustment bolts, a lightweight line of I.D. Race Springs, and the ever popular Quick-Safe Wheel Bolt Stud conversions. All of their products are vehicle specific and are produced to enhance handling potential, personal style, and retain vehicle ride comfort.

H&R springs with B6 shocks
question for HarryN - can you elaborate on how much this set up lowered your B5S4 compared to stock? Pictures would be great! Thanks

H&R Sedan/Avant Springs
These springs, according to H&R, are for the Sedan and Avant. Don't ask. But for the sake of this review, I will say these are for the sedan. I installed these sport springs with my Bilstein B6 HD shocks (it is supported) on my B5 S4. I could not be any happier. The drop is not obnoxious, but is slightly lower than the stock ride height on the B5 S4 and it looks great. The previous owner installed some garbage Chinese brand springs on my car, and eventually the original stock shocks got blown. I immediately threw them all away and replaced them with the Bilstein B6 HD and H&R Sport Springs. This is a VERY good combo in my opinion, and the ride quality is greatly improved. Bumps in the roads and rough spots in the road aren't that harsh versus stock, but will be felt. Road feel in the steering wheel is greatly improved as well. Like all suspension work, make sure to check your alignment after installation. Allow 600 to 1000 miles for the springs and spring pads/mount to break in before doing another and final alignment.
