Alternator

If your car is running out of power (literally) it's likely due to a worn or failing alternator. Your vehicles car battery is responsible for storing enough energy to start the car while the alternator powers all the vehicles systems with the engine running while maintaining a battery charge. If your car dies while driving and the battery has little to no charge it's most likely due to a failed or failing alternator. Before condemning an alternator you can perform a simple test with a DVOM (digital volt meter). Also make sure the belt which drives the alternator is properly tensioned as well.

No more "Power System Service Urgent" and red triangle of death!
When I got the dreaded warning message and red triangle of death, I was sad because I knew what that meant: alternator replacement on my V8 Volvo - not a fun job at all. Thanks to FCP Euro for having the correct part that my XC90 V8 needs to keep running. Note that if your alternator has the heat shield and ducting, you will need to transfer the alternator backing plate from your old alternator to this alternator, as the backing plate on this alternator will not accept the duct. That process is really not a big deal, so don't worry about it. I am happy to report that after that miserable day of doing the alternator replacement 6 months ago, my XC90 has made 3 successful 1500 mile road trips and daily life with no issues at all.

The alternator was a perfect fit. Installation was a bit intense. Everything was to original equipment. Very Happy. 2006 Volvo xc90 v8 180,000 mi.

Works great, wish it came with the snorkel
This is the older style, so if you already have a fresh air snorkel duct thing then it just transfers over. If you have the older design, FCP offers a kit to add the snorkel and pieces onto this alternator, its a little pricey tho. I decided I would rather install their fresh air kit than potentially have to do this job again in a few years (I live in a hot climate). All in all though, I'm sure it would have been just fine with or without so not worth deducting a star.

Bosch OE Replacement Alternator
Fitment is great, function works well. For those concern of the dreaded "aftermarket units dont work on Volvo" --- Typically if you have an existing charge light/power system service urgent message on prior to the alternator replacement, the Alternator Control Module (ACM) can short out and damage the ECM. (There is a LIN bus connection between the two components) So if you replace the alternator and the message is still on, likely the ECM is damaged or the LIN wire is damaged. Have a trained technician diagnose the circuit. But this unit works well.

Replaced OEM alternator with this one. Just make sure to move over the cooling duct from your OEM alternator to this one.

Exactly what I needed & WAY cheaper than a brand new!
The pictures are accurate & I'm very impressed with the quality (for a refurb). If you are replacing a newer-style V8 alternator with modified heatshield snorkel asmb. (Volvo later changed it to reduce overheating failures of the original design), you must swap the alternators rear, black, plastic vent covers in order to accept the snorkel & shield. If you're existing alternator has the original/simple heatshield (without snorkel), this refurb can simply install like normal. HOWEVER, if you would like to upgrade your old-style with new-style (instead of RE-replacing it every 90k mi), you will need to buy a NEW Volvo alternator ($500) & separately purchase the new-style shield & snorkel ($200).

It's every bit as hard to replace as you'd expect, but it's a perfect replacement in a 2005 XC90 V8. If you have small hands, it might be easier. I don't. I taught myself a couple new swear words trying to cram the dang thing through the wheelwell hole and up the backside and over the top, convinced that I was saving $$ from the dealer. Spent $ on beer and other $ on band-aids from knucklebusting and armslashing trying to get the teeny $#!% little screws threaded. It's ALMOST easier to pull the engine to swap alternators than to drop the suspension and then try - just try - to get it lined back up during reassembly. And DON'T walk away for a couple of hours to calm your nerves, or you'll end up finishing in the dark which is a big help when searching for the Torx driver that is guaranteed to fall out of the socket and disappear. But the alternator itself is a fine thing. Works like a charm. 5 stars.

Fits perfect, looks brand new for a rebuilt.
No issues whatsoever, other than tight space job. Fixed my overvoltage warning and many other issues that were a result of that.
