Now, take off the front wheels with a lug wrench and loosen the clamps on the bellows boot. These are positioned around the inner tie-rod, the rack, and the pinion housing, Pull the bellows boo at you until it is off of the housing. Examine the inside of the boot for too much of power steering fluid build up. If there is just a little bit of fluid around the seals, this is where it should be. But if there is an excessive amount of fluid in the boot, this will be the clue that you need to replace the rack and pinion system. Next, take off the dust boot covering the pinion shaft to the steering column sector shaft. This should be positioned on top of the steering rack. Examine the pinion seal for any leaks. Another way to inspect your steering rack is to examine the rack and pinion if you notice the pinion seal has a leak. It is time to take your Volvo off of the jack and put it back on the ground. Have a friend rotate your steering wheel back and forth as you watch the pinion shaft. If the pinion shaft starts to move around without forcing the wheel to move, you need a new rack and pinion assembly.
