It can also be used to generate power inverters. A power inverter uses the 12-volt power from the lighter and converts it to usable 120-volt AC current. The center tube has a flared lip on one end and threads on the other half of the tube. The larger tube is created to thread over the top of the center tube. This way, when the center tube is installed through a hole in the dash, the second tube is threaded over the center tube from behind the dash, pinching the dash between both tubes. Open the hood and take out the negative terminal on the battery, using a wrench. Get access to the back of the lighter. Commonly, just reaching below the dash lets enough room to reach the lighter. In some instances, the lighter is found next to the ashtray, which can be taken out to get to the lighter. The first thing to do is pull the positive, or power wire, off the rear center post on the lighter. It is on a straight post. Pull the negative, or ground wire, off the blade terminal on the rear side of the lighter. Put one of your thumbs on the front of your BMW’s in cabin lighter, while using the pliers to rotate the outer tube counterclockwise to loosen it. Once it has loosened on the threads, take it off by hand and pull the outside tube off the center tube. Isolate the two pieces of the new lighter in the same way, by rotating the outer tube counterclockwise to thread it off the inner tube. Put in the inner tube through the hole in the dash. Reach below the dash and thread the outer tube over the inner tube. Rotate the outer tube clockwise to secure and pinch the dash between both pieces of the lighter. Plug the power wire connector on the center post on the back of the lighter and then plug the negative ground blade connector on the side terminal on the lighter. You can then put in the negative battery terminal connector and secure it with a wrench.
