More Reliable than BMW Wahler Thermostat
Had this Behr thermostat on my 2004 BMW X3 from 2013 to 2017, never had a problem with it. Did a cooling system overhaul 5 years later (2017) using Whaler (OE) thermostat, it failed at the o-ring around electrical socket less than a year. Decided to use Genuine BMW thermostat (Wahler, same thermostat) and this thermostat failed at the same exact location after 1 year, o-ring at the electrical connection causing dripping out of the weep hole. Had coolant on my belts, pulleys, etc... Wahler/BMW thermostat has a better spring design but the electrical socket sensor o-ring design SUCKS! Comparing this new Behr/Mahle thermostat to the original Behr thermostat I have in my stash from several years ago (with the BMW logo ground off), it seems the spring design for this aftermarket Behr/Mahle thermostat changed (for the worse) and it is sticking and making popping nosies as the engine is heating up (you can hear it) when the spring moves (no it's not binding against the engine block, not an alignment problem). I tested it before installing it and it did the same thing, binding, clicking, popping nosies. I'm afraid it will either get stuck in the closed position and cause overheating or the open position (hopefully open). Installed it over the weekend, didn't have another option to run to the dealer for a BMW thermostat. Will give Behr/Mahle the benefit of the doubt since I never had issues in the past. After carefully bleeding the air out of the system, running the engine through a couple short cycles hot/cold, the thermostat stopped making noises and seems to be working as normal. Might just be tight & need a break in period.......? Scary....... Just glad it's fixed and pray this leaky thermostat problem stops. Driving me nuts. No, it's not a head gasket, no air bubbles in the cooling system after 5 very careful meticulous bleed cycles.

BMW Thermostat Assembly - Mahle Behr 11537509227
Trusted, works right away, made in Italy, price is good. Funny thing is some Ebay posting sell used thermostat that not made in Europe for the same price!

Mahle Behr thermostat assembly
Replaced the old cheap Autozone purchased thermostat (the gasket melted and flattened) coolant splurged all over the engine compartment. ‘Twas an Emergent Fix. Lol

96F Solid
Installed a different brand thermostat that developed a leak soon after. Coolant was leaking out of the heating pin. Temperature was unstable and hit as high as 105F. Mehle Behr looks to have a more secure design (no twisting mechanism to pull the pin out). There is no leak after 6 months. Temperature is 96F constantly.

OE part
My old thermostat hasn't leak but has throw a code. It was a Behr from 2001. This part is the OE for European BMW.
