These gaskets must be replaced about once a year to prevent oil leaking onto the top of the engine and running down the front and rear of the motor, making a terrible mess, ruining the engine mounts and confusing your mechanic. Buy a bunch of the cheap ones and just change them annually... makes like much easier.

For the trivial cost, why not replace the gasket say every other oil change? Fits perfectly and feels so good to snug it down on the top of the engine. Just do it.

Rubber? Really, should be made from silicone to really be a permanent fix. This lasts about 1-2 years before these need to be replaced. The more driving the faster they dry out and need replacement. These are cheap insurance to keep your oil in the engine than splashing out of it.
