Control arms are an essential part of your Volvo's suspension. Most commonly replaced due to worn out bushings, these arms are the lower component that connects the steering knuckle, ball joint, and strut's to the vehicle's frame and/or body. Without a sturdy set of control arms there is a good chance your vehicle will wander all over the road. Refresh your ride!

Common Failure Symptoms:

  • Noise from front end over bumps
  • Abnormal tire wear
  • Vehicle wandering while driving
  • Poor Steering response
  • Poor Handling

You Get What You Pay For

I just removed this control arm from my 1998 S90 after 50,000 miles and 4-1/2 years. Not only was the rubber of the large aft bushing significantly cracked, the front bushing's rubber was also extruding and its bolt sleeve could be wobbled by hand (the front bushing almost never needs replacing on the OEM). Another symptom: the aft bushing partially eased out of its cavity as I removed the aft bolt and tapered cross-brace. The bushing is supposed to be a friction fit so tight that a press is required for removal. I own the factory manual for 960/90 suspension and meticulously followed the installation procedure in 2012. What caused me to examine these bushings was excessive wear on my tires despite having had an alignment when they were installed and rotating regularly. We went through a set of ContiExtremes in 30K miles! Other consequences besides new tires include new ball joints due to the removal process and of course an alignment. Fortunately I had kept the original control arms and have now renewed them by finding the tools to press in an OEM aft bushing (see my review there). One final note: these Meyle control arms are steel instead of aluminum (later model 960/90s). Thus they weigh 3-4 times more than the OEMs. I don't know if this affected dynamic response and played a role in the premature bushing wear. I suspect it was mostly poor quality rubber and workmanship. Unfortunately I went all-in on these after-market arms based on the Meyle name and put them on my other two 960/90s as well. They are also showing signs of premature wear. So I will be replacing them too. Bottom line: these control arms ended up costing me a lot more than I thought I saved, and I wouldn’t trust anything but OEMs.

Good Quality Replacement Part.

I am not sure which manufacturer it was URO or Myele. it was for my 97 960 and it tightened up the steering and handling drastically. It easier, cheaper that to get bushings and pressing them in. Best part about 960 is you can put these on yourself. no need for a press or any 'shop' tool. good quality product, cheaper here at fcp than rockauto or ebay!

Some of the reviewers above may have been rewarded for their positive & negative reviews. We don't hold anything back.
