I had a small dead spot in the center of my steering after 114,000 miles. All of my suspension bushings, ball joints, etc. have already been replaced or upgraded, so I did a little research and found out about the steering coupler, which acts a bit like the guibo between the drive shaft and the diff. Eventually the rubber wears out and it needs to be replaced. I just did the job this weekend and it works as advertised. No more dead spot. It ain't a sexy fix, but it does the job!

BMW Steering Coupling Assembly Lower
Fitment is perfect. I recommend all BMW owners replace the lower Steering Control assembly if their vehicle is over 80,000 miles, or if you feel any play in the steering wheel. To check, while the car is stopped - in park position, and the engine OFF. If you can move the steering wheel from left to right with little force, which means there is play in the steering wheel, the lower Steering Control assembly is worn. This is the same place where steering wheel alignment is corrected.
