When I got my E92 328i idle RPMs fluctuated, I was hearing tons of lifter tick, and the engine was burning oil (the last owner had been getting oil changes at jiffy lube). 2 months later I started putting in Castrol Edge 5w40, and things improved but lifter tick was still there. After a few oil changes with Castrol I switched to Liquimoly and the engine runs better than ever: stable and very smooth idle, it doesn't burn a drop of oil, and lifter tick is pretty much gone. 170K mile N52.
