For the vehicles listed with all-wheel drive (xDrive / xi) the same fluid is used for the front and rear differential.

Three liters are needed in total. A drain and fill plug are on the front differential, p/n 33117525064 for both applications, with only a fill plug being present on the rear differential, p/n 33117525064. You will need to siphon the fluid out of the rear differential through the fill plug hole, we recommend using p/n B3300000 to accomplish that task.

Three liters. Two liters for the rear differential and one liter for the front differential. Please note your E61 does not have a rear differential drain plug. You will either need to siphon as much fluid out as possible or remove the differential cover which is also a mounting point for the diff itself.

Between 1 and 2 liters. However, please note there is no drain plug on the rear diff of your vehicle. To drain the fluid you will either need siphon the gear oil out which will leave fluid in the case or remove the cover from the case which will require resealing the diff.

About 1.4 liters will fill the differential. Please note your differential does not have a drain plug so either the cover will need to be removed or the fluid will have to be siphoned out.

What's the best way to make sure the vehicle is level for performing differential fluid service? Does raising all four wheels the same amount work or do you need to raise all four jack stand points at the same height?

The vehicle would need to be lifted the same height at all 4 corners on a relatively flat working surface.
