Volvo Steering Rack Parts

Volvo is universally renowned for their awareness to quality and reliability, which has been a part of their history since the start. They have a great standing, which has allowed them to bring the company into an industry leader, and more specifically, with their steering rack parts and components. The steering rack in your Volvo controls your steering and is built with an input shaft and gear, pinion, and a horizontal shaft and gear. The rack is in a sealed housing that is bolted to the frame of your Volvo. The first thing to do when inspecting your Volvo’s steering rack is to slide your jack beneath the front subframe. Start the engine and examine the front wheels. If your Volvo’s front wheels start turning on their own, you need to replace the steering rack. This situation is the result of a sticking spool valve in the rack and pinion system. Next, force the wheels back and forth by hand and look at the tie-rods that join the steering rack to the steering knuckle close to the wheel. Any noticeable movement, with a bit of force on the tie-rod joints, will point directly to damaged tie-rods. FCP Euro has a famous line up of updated Volvo steering rack parts including, Volvo Steering Rack Boot Kit Parts, Volvo Rack and Pinion Bellow Parts and Volvo Lock Nut Parts.

Now, take off the front wheels with a lug wrench and loosen the clamps on the bellows boot. These are positioned around the inner tie-rod, the rack, and the pinion housing, Pull the bellows boo at you until it is off of the housing. Examine the inside of the boot for too much of power steering fluid build up. If there is just a little bit of fluid around the seals, this is where it should be. But if there is an excessive amount of fluid in the boot, this will be the clue that you need to replace the rack and pinion system. Next, take off the dust boot covering the pinion shaft to the steering column sector shaft. This should be positioned on top of the steering rack. Examine the pinion seal for any leaks. Another way to inspect your steering rack is to examine the rack and pinion if you notice the pinion seal has a leak. It is time to take your Volvo off of the jack and put it back on the ground. Have a friend rotate your steering wheel back and forth as you watch the pinion shaft. If the pinion shaft starts to move around without forcing the wheel to move, you need a new rack and pinion assembly.
