BMW Differential Parts

BMW has made it customary for the brand to prioritize the quality and inventive designs for their brand in all of their products and vehicles, all while forcing the competitions to keep up with their high values. BMW is part of Germany’s big three of automakers, along with Audi and Mercedes. They make up the three best selling luxury vehicle creators in the world. Their reliability speaks for itself and follows into their products, even their differential parts and components. BMW’s with rear-wheel drive have a differential, which work in harmony with the two rear axles, allowing the rear wheels to rotate at the same speed when taking a corner. The differential is a set of gears, like your transmission, that are filled with gear oil. It is important regularly inspect the differential gear oil to make sure there are not any leaks. The first thing you need to do to inspect this is to make sure you are parked on level ground with your engine shut off. Find out whether your BMW has front- or rear-wheel drive and then locate the differential. It is below the rear center part of your vehicle, between the two rear wheels, and is shaped and sized like a round squash. There are axles that will be coming out of either side of the differential that join to each rear wheel. Now you can jack up the front and back of your BMW and support it by using four jack stands. Find the bolt on the side of the differential. It will be facing toward the back of your BMW. If you have questions about BMW’s differential parts or components, the FCP Euro team and website are here for any support.

Select a wrench or socket that fits the bolt and rotate it counterclockwise to loosen it and then take it out slowly. The gear oil should be level with the bolt hole and dribble out or you can reach in and inspect the level with your finger. Add some 90 weight gear oil if the level is too low, as it must be pumped into the differential. There are smaller pumps that attach to these plastic oil bottles. Replace and tighten the bolt and then take out the jack stands and lower your BMW. It is important to know you should not inspect your BMW’s gear oil unless the whole is level or else you will get an imprecise reading. If the differential is constantly low every time you need to inspect it, as you possibly have a leak. Look for any moisture and make an appointment to see your garage. Never get below your vehicle if it is not supported only by a jack and always use jack stands. Do not use regular motor oil because it is too thin.
