About Audi A8
An Audi A8 is the flagship luxury sedan for Audi built on the D platform, the production of this chassis dates back to the D2 in 1994. All Audi A8 models are built on an aluminum frame with the A8 being the first mass market with an aluminum chassis with the guidance and development from Alcoa, it was marketed by Audi as the “Audi Space Frame”. The Audi A8 D2 chassis wasnt available in the US until the 1997 model year. The Audi A8 sedan was available in a standard wheelbase along with an Audi A8L extended wheel base. The purpose of the Audi A8L was to add an additional 5 inches to the wheel base for added leg room. The second generation marked the release of the D3 chassis in June of 2003 for the US market. It was longer than the first generation and offered a fresh new interior and exterior look. A high powered top of the line W12 sub model was released alongside of the V8 and TDI engine options. During the years of the second generation the A8 received additional technology options including adaptive cruise, collision warning, lane assist and 1,000 watt Bang & Olufsen sound system. The third generation D4 Audi A8 featured an upgraded MMI Multi-Media Interface with touch pad, 3D navigation, night vision and stability control to name a few. The third generation of 2010 & up models incorporated the same all aluminum Audi Space frame used on previous models making it the lightest all-wheel drive full size car compared to other competitors in the luxury car segment. The Audi A8 has engine options including the 3.0 TFSI supercharged engine, 4.2 liter V8 and W12 engine.
