Voltage Regulator - Huco 1197311213

MY beloved 98 v70t5m failed to start after I had parked it for a few minutes. The battery first seem to be the culprit since a jump got me going again. I tested the battery and alternator output and found it was doing @12.4v with no lights or fans. I had the choice to find a good rebuilt alternator or try replacing the voltage reg while the Alt stayed in the car. Since my car has the power steering pump mounted above the alt and the time involved to remove and replace the pump, alt, serpentine belt, etc was more hours than I had available I choice to try the in car voltage regulator option. The hardest part of the job was getting the alt's cover off and out of the way. One release clip closest to the engine tab snapped off as I lifted it and locked the cover onto the alt. After many attempts with other tools, I was able fit a 2mm allen wrench to the side of the locking part of the clip and lift and release it. The next hard part was to get the cover out of the way. FYI: once you lift it off the battery cable stud, try to rotate it forward and around to the front side of the alt. It was the only direction that it would clear the manifold. Be careful to have all the wires and hose out of the way. It's hard to see the screws holding the voltage regulator so be careful not to unscrew the big easy to see ones that hold the back of the alternator onto it's body. Short racketing screwdrivers worked for me. When I compared the old bosch and new Huco, I noticed the huco doesn't have the ground wired tab. But having no choice but installing it now it was going in. Be sure to compare the offset from the screw holes and the brushes. It looks like it may fit in both ways unlike the bosch. Once it was in the closure and wire connection is only 10 minute. The moment of trust, Yes car started, yippee, but what's the output.... 13.9v. seems good. with the fan on 13.4-5v. Still better than the old bosch that had no brushes left. I'll test it again in a few weeks once the new brushes are bedded in. the only reason I'm giving the regulator 4 stars is there was no knowledge it doesn't have a ground tab and it's to soon to know if it will last. However $33 and an hour sure beats 3-4 and $250 in materials. Big thanks to fcp and our video friend Robert.
