Product Information

Volvo Fuel Pump Insert - Bosch

Often a faulty fuel pump means the car will crank, but not start. If you turn your ignition to the second position (before cranking), often you can hear the fuel pump running, thus if you cannot hear it, it is possible you need a new fuel pump or fuel pump relay.

Includes filter, does not include the rest of the assembly

FCP recommends checking:

  • Fuel pressure
  • Voltage at the pump
  • Fuel lines and hoses
Electric Fuel Pump

An electric fuel pump is responsible for pumping fuel from the fuel tank to the engine at the appropriate pressure and flow rate. Electric fuel pumps are typically located inside the fuel tank or mounted externally and are activated by the vehicle’s ignition system. They ensure that fuel is delivered consistently to the engine for combustion, supporting overall engine performance and efficiency.

Electric Fuel Pump Failure Symptoms
  • Difficulty Starting the Engine: If the fuel pump is struggling to deliver fuel, the engine may have trouble starting or may take longer than usual to crank and start
  • Loss of Power: A malfunctioning fuel pump can lead to a loss of engine power, making it difficult to accelerate or maintain speed, especially when climbing hills or carrying heavy loads

Needed to modify for ‘96 850 Turbo, but it works!
Used a dremel to cut away the black plastic housing and cut around the black intake nipple to keep it on so the fuel sock could stay mounted on. Fit perfectly into the old fuel pump assembly afterwards and my car runs great and quiet!

Got it running...
I replaced the original pump on my '97 about a month ago at 25 years and 166000 miles...The price is right on the insert and althoght it does not exactly 100% fit in there, it does work out with some fine-anglelin'...Car runs great! Thanks FCP!i

not a straight forward plug and play replacement
The replacement was not a straight forward plug and play for my 98 V70T5m. First, Let’s all thank Crisk for posting his review about cutting off the plastic housing and FCP for getting me the new pump in 1-½ days. I took the modification a step further. I kept the intake plastic nipple part on the plastic housing that the filter presses onto. I cut away the housing with a 6” lenex mini hacksaw blade put in my jewelers saw and kept the cutting edge parallel to the side of the pump and slowly cut into the side of the housing. Next I cut square around the nipple to separate it from the rest of the housing. You only need to cut one side. Slide a 6”x1/4” blade screwdriver between the pump and the housing and the housing will crack off. You should be left with the nipple still intact. Next use the saw blade to trim the extra plastic off the nipple down to the brass ring. A foam ear plug squeezed into the intake might work to keep dirt out. File the plastic so it’s almost the nipple’s factory diameter where the filter presses onto. A Leatherman tool file will work, but I used my course jewelers file. Cut off about 6-8mm off the end of the nipple. FYI: be very careful not to let any dust or plastic filings go into the intake of the pump. Wrap a piece of 320 sandpaper to clear up the edges. Sand very, very lightly or the filter will lose it’s ability to press fit onto the nipple and will fall off in the tank. If you over sanded and that happens, use some high quality teflon plumbers tape around the nipple. You should now be within 1-2mm of the original overall length. I have lots of photos if anyone needs them. Also the original bosch fuel pump removed from my car was # 0 580 453 420. I’m guessing that Volvo used a few different housing bases on complete pump assembly for different pumps and that the FCP’s replacement may be for a different assembly. Let’s also give a cheer to my wife for letting me do the work in the kitchen and getting that wonderful manly Eau de Octane (gasoline) Cologne on me.

Bosch Fuel Pump
I was replacing an original Bosch fuel pump on my 1998 S70. The new fuel pump comes encased in a black plastic housing. This housing would not fit into the pump assembly. I ended up cutting the housing off and the encased pump was an exact match to the original. The only issue is the new fuel screen attached to the plastic housing so I just reused the original fuel screen.

Mr
The new pump is an inch shorter than the OE pump. The old fuel line, in good condition, is almost too short to reattach properly. It would be nice if FCP included a new 6 inch hose hose. After 20 years, the rubber end of the fuel return line was falling apart. That small piece should also be included with the pump motor. I will probably be taking the pump assembly out again to repair these two 'problems', just for piece of mind. BTW, the OE pump was marked Bosch #0580453037, for a 1995 855T, and was not on the list of OE parts.

Nice "Made in Germany" Bosch pump at an excellent price! Only 1 mark-off (really should be a 4.5 score) because there's no "lip" that fits to the metal spring from the assembly (photo here, the [silver] factory pump has makes a lip between the metal and the tall plastic center: http://imgur.com/q51fjtf, where the spring sits comfortably). So, for this pump, you have to flip the spring upside and force it on the metal. After that, it fits just fine!

Question Posted by Minseo
I have 1995 850 GLT 2.5 Will it fit for both Bosch LH 3.2 Jetronic and Bosch Motronic 4.3/4.4? I thought mine was LH 3.2 Jetronic. But when I'm selecting in FCPEURO, It says 1995 850 GLT has Bosch Motronic. I'm confusing about that. Plz let me know this pump will fit for both Bosch LH 3.2 Jetronic and Bosch Motronic 4.3/4.4.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This unit will work for your 850. However be aware that Volvo changed the housing and related materials across years and models, so in order to get this pump to situate correctly in your housing some minor modification may be required depending on what the exact setup is in your vehicle.
Question Posted by a customer
Hi Folks I need to rebuild a BOSCH Fuel pump PN 0589254984 and would like to know if you might have a rebuild/repair kit for that unit? The pump is from a 1977 Saab 99 GL 2 ltr gas engine. Thanks James mensamoose@gmail.com
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Hi James, unfortunately, we checked a few of our master parts databases and for the 77 2.0GL I am not coming across a part number OE interchange that is compatible. You may need to try to make a universal solution work for this application.
Question Posted by a customer
What's the difference between this (Pump Insert) and "Fuel Pump Assembly"? I have an 850 Turbo wagon (1995) and think the fuel pump is not working properly (cranks but doesn't start for more than 10 -20 sec's). I already replaced the fuel relay.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The insert is just the pump motor itself while the pump assembly is the entire unit with a new sending unit.
